- As a young man, Dennis Balthaser would look into the night sky and wonder

1944, the U.S. Navy submarine Tang was already legendary-it had sunk more enemy
ships, rescued more downed airmen, and pulled off more daring surface attacks
than any other Allied submarine in the Pacific. And then, on her fifth patrol,
disaster struck. The Tang's last torpedo went out straight on target, but suddenly
malfunctioned, turned back in an erratic "circular run," and struck
the Tang with such enormous force that half of the eighty-seven-man crew was killed
instantly. The survivors who went down with the Tang struggled to stay alive in
their submerged "iron coffin" one hundred eighty feet beneath the surface,
while the Japanese dropped deadly depth charges. As the oxygen depleted, some
of the men made a daring ascent through the escape trunk. In the end just nine
men of the original crew survived, including four who had been thrown from the
bridge when the faulty torpedo hit, and had managed to tread water for over eight
hours. But all of them were just beginning a far greater ordeal. After being picked
up by a Japanese patrol vessel, the survivors from the Tang were sent to a secret
Japanese interrogation camp known as the "Torture Farm." When they were
finally liberated in August 1945, they were close to death, but they had revealed

Maria Elena Holly said that Peggy Sue Gerron's, Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?,
is unauthorized and will harm Holly's name, her reputation and that of her company,
Holly Properties. "It's very interesting that this woman makes up all these
stories," she said. "He never, never considered Peggy Sue a friend."
Peggy Sue Gerron responded by claiming her 1st Amendment right to publish her
story about her relationship with rock n roll legend, Buddy Holly, and others
who had a great impact on her life. Gerron, who lives in Lubbock and wrote the
283 page-book in the past year with another woman from West Texas, said she wrote
the book because 2008 is the 50th anniversary of the release of "Peggy Sue."
Holly also recorded "Peggy Sue Got Married." Mark Faulk, chief executive
officer of the publisher, TogiEntertainment Inc, said the threat of a lawsuit
won't deter Gerron or his company. "It's obvious that they do not want the
work released," he said. "My feeling is that Maria Elena fears the truth
will come out about Buddy Holly. If there is a lawsuit, our belief is that it
will be totally frivolous." Gerron said material for the book came from diary
entries she wrote during the time she knew the singer, she said. "I wanted
to give him his voice. It's my book, my memoirs," she said from Tyler, Texas,
where her publishing company held the first news conference defending Gerron's
right to pen her biography. "We were very, very good friends. He was probably
one of the best friends I ever had." The Buddy Holly family is siding with
Peggy Sue. Buddy Holly's niece, Ingrid Holly Kaiter, says she wasn't surprised
by Maria Elena's reaction. Kaiter said, "Maria doesn't represent the opinion
of the Holly family. We support Peggy Sue and her book. We think it's a really
good idea." Kaiter also said that Buddy would never name a song after someone
he didn't know and that Buddy must have been close friends with Peggy Sue. Maria
Elena Holly claims in the cease and desist letter that Whatever Happened To Peggy
Sue is "unauthorized" and will "cause considerable confusion and
to irreparably harm to both the name of Buddy Holly as well as Ms. Holly's reputation
and goodwill." Holly also says that the book may also infringe upon Ms. Holly's
right of privacy, if it portrays Ms. Holly in a false light that is offensive
and causes emotional anguish. She claims that the Peggy Sue book is "not
a biography and that it will not provide the "truth" about Buddy Holly
and Ms. Holly, or give any real "facts" about Buddy Holly and legitimate
public concern." Maria Elena Holly says she and her company, Holly Properties,
are "likely to suffer severe and irreparable harm if this book is published.
Confusion and tarnishment of Buddy Holly's name and Ms. Holly's reputation are
likely to result from this unauthorized work." The letter demands the ceasing
of promotion and sale of the book, removal of the subtitle and cancellation of
all book orders. It also asks for refunds on any deposits for the book and for

jolted Wenchuan County, 159 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Chengdu,
at 2:28 p.m. Monday. A spokesman with China Seismological Bureau (CSB) said the
intense quake was felt in at least 16 provinces, municipalities and autonomous
regions, including Beijing, Shanghai and Tibet. The shocks, which were even felt
in the Thai capital of Bangkok, 1,800 kilometers from the epicenter, leveled buildings,
cut transport and electricity supplies, and caused flights to and from the affected
areas to be canceled or postponed. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived near
the quake center Monday afternoon by plane, said the quake was a "major disaster"
and called for calm. and courage. Officials in Sichuan said at least 8,533 people
were dead in the province as of 10 p.m. Monday. In Beichuan, another county hard
hit by the quake, the number of people dead is estimated at 5,000, and up to 10,000
people are injured. In one of the worst tragedies, almost 900 students in the
Juyuan Middle School in Dujiangyan City, about 100 km from Wenchuan, were feared
to be buried after a building collapsed. Rescuers recovered at least 50 bodies
as devastated parents watched. Eight excavators and five cranes were brought in
for rescue work and an ambulance waited. Xinhua reporters saw a three-storey school
building had partially collapsed at the school. Teenagers partially buried were
struggling to free themselves from the ruins while others were heard calling for
help. A tearful mother said her son, ninth-grader Zhang Chengwei, was buried in
the ruins. An unknown number of students were also reported buried after buildings
collapsed at five other schools in the province's Deyang City, where a quake measuring
5.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 4:21 p.m. Monday, according to the Sichuan
provincial seismological bureau. In the neighboring provinces, 61 people were
killed in Shaanxi, 48 in Gansu, 50 in Chongqing, one in Yunnan and one in Henan,
according to the national headquarters for disaster relief. A rescue team heading
to Wenchuan County were trapped in Dujiangyan City as the highways to the county
were blocked by huge rock falls, the headquarters said. The quake also forced
several major highways and expressways in southwestern Sichuan and northwestern

bureau. In the neighboring provinces, 61 people were killed in Shaanxi, 48 in
Gansu, 50 in Chongqing, one in Yunnan and one in Henan, according to the national
headquarters for disaster relief. A rescue team heading to Wenchuan County were
trapped in Dujiangyan City as the highways to the county were blocked by huge
rock falls, the headquarters said. The quake also forced several major highways
and expressways in southwestern Sichuan and northwestern Shaanxi provinces to
close, according to the Ministry of Transport. Dozens of flights at Chengdu Shuangliu
International Airport and trains departing from Chengdu were suspended. Communication

Do Not Clash With Church Doctrine - Believing that the universe may contain
alien life does not contradict a faith in God, the Vatican's chief astronomer
said in an interview published Tuesday. The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit
director of the Vatican Observatory, was quoted as saying the vastness of the
universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth,
even intelligent ones. "How can we rule out that life may have developed
elsewhere?" Funes said. "Just as we consider earthly creatures as 'a
brother,' and 'sister,' why should we not talk about an 'extraterrestrial brother'?
It would still be part of creation." In the interview by the Vatican newspaper
L'Osservatore Romano, Funes said that such a notion "doesn't contradict our
faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures. Ruling out the existence
of aliens would be like "putting limits" on God's creative freedom,
he said. The interview, headlined "The extraterrestrial is my brother,"
covered a variety of topics including the relationship between the Roman Catholic
Church and science, and the theological implications of the existence of alien
life. Funes said science, especially astronomy, does not contradict religion,
touching on a theme of Pope Benedict XVI, who has made exploring the relationship
between faith and reason a key aspect of his papacy. The Bible "is not a
science book," Funes said, adding that he believes the Big Bang theory is
the most "reasonable" explanation for the creation of the universe.
The theory says the universe began billions of years ago in the explosion of a
single, super-dense point that contained all matter. But he said he continues
to believe that "God is the creator of the universe and that we are not the
result of chance." Funes urged the church and the scientific community to
leave behind divisions caused by Galileo's persecution 400 years ago, saying the
incident has "caused wounds." In 1633 the astronomer was tried as a
heretic and forced to recant his theory that the Earth revolved around the sun.
Church teaching at the time placed Earth at the center of the universe. "The
church has somehow recognized its mistakes," he said. "Maybe it could
have done it better, but now it's time to heal those wounds and this can be done
through calm dialogue and collaboration." Pope John Paul declared in 1992
that the ruling against Galileo was an error resulting from "tragic mutual
incomprehension." The Vatican Observatory has been at the forefront of efforts
to bridge the gap between religion and science. Its scientist-clerics have generated
top-notch research and its meteorite collection is considered one of the world's
best. The observatory, founded by Pope Leo XIII in 1891, is based in Castel Gandolfo,
a lakeside town in the hills outside Rome where the pope has a summer residence.
